This is a session recap. For the full in-depth article, read How to Find Good Domains to Buy on GoDaddy Auctions
How to Find Great Domains
on GoDaddy Auctions
Section 1What Makes a Domain Valuable?
✅ Adds Value
- Short length — fewer characters = more valuable
- .com extension — still the clear #1
- Rising TLDs: .co, .org, .ai are strong contenders
- Strong keywords that businesses actively search
- Brandability — easy to remember and market
❌ Detracts Value
- Hard to pronounce or spell
- Long or multi-word descriptive names
- Numbers or hyphens in the name
- .net — was ~1/9th .com value; still declining
- Obscure TLDs with low buyer demand
Based on 150,000 real sales over $1,000 in the past ~2 years. Data compiled by Joe Styler using his custom AI companion tool.
| # | TLD | Est. Share | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | .com | ~72–75% | Dominant | Undisputed king; buy confidently |
| 2 | .org | ~8–10% | Strong 2nd | Reliable demand across categories |
| 3 | .ai | ~4–6% | Fast-Growing | Very hot now; long-term TBD — still buy |
| 4 | .net | ~2–3% | Declining | Steady drop; no longer ~1/9th of .com |
| 5 | .de | ~1–2% | Top ccTLD | Strongest country-code TLD by volume |
Section 2Liquidity vs. Illiquidity — Know Before You Buy
💧 Liquid Names
- Short, brandable, 3-letter .coms
- Can sell at any time
- Reliable low-to-mid 5 figures wholesale
- Best reach 6 figures retail
- Predictable, dependable assets
🪨 Illiquid Names
- Long, multi-word, descriptive names
- Names with numbers or hyphens
- May sit for years unsold
- May sell for ~$100 or not at all
- Trap for new and over-eager investors
Section 3Finding Domains on auctions.godaddy.com
- Go to auctions.godaddy.com → Advanced Search
Filter by TLD, length, price, age, traffic, backlinks, search volume. Many new data columns and sorting features have been added in the last year — explore them. - Save your searches
Don’t re-enter criteria every time. Save and reuse. Build a library of saved searches organized by your investing niches. - Pro Move: inventory.auctions.godaddy.com
Download the full auction inventory list and import it into your own tools — Excel, AI, or API scripts. This unlocks far more power than the UI alone.
Section 4Working the List in Excel
- Zoom in — easier on the eyes, easier to scan large lists
- Freeze the headers — always know which column you’re reading as you scroll
- Add a “Picks” column — mark favorites with an X; sort to top when done reviewing
- Rearrange columns — move the most important data right next to the domain name
- Sort by GoDaddy Estimated Value first — great shortlist starting point (not the final word)
- Re-sort by Age — surfaces older, overlooked names from a different angle
- Re-sort by Exact Match TLDs — fresh perspective, new finds
- Keep sorting by different columns — each pass surfaces hidden gems others miss
Section 5Your Valuation Funnel
- Domain Academy Valuation Tool (free with DDC Pro)
Shows sales velocity, Google Trends, trademark data, company count, GitHub repos, and more. Produces realistic wholesale AND retail estimates to guide your bidding. - Supplement with NameBio
No single tool has perfect coverage. NameBio provides excellent backfill comparable sales data. - Apply The Three Rs to every comp:
- RELEVANT — Same TLD? Similar keyword strength and pattern?
- RECENT — Within the last ~5 years. Older sales mislead.
- RETAIL — End-user purchases only. Expired auction prices ≠ retail comps.
- Business Signal / Demand Validation Check:
- Are real businesses using this term?
- Is there a cost-per-click (CPC) value on the keyword?
- Are there paid ads when you Google the term?
Section 6AI & Automation — The Automation Ladder
- Don’t just write a prompt — have a conversation
- Talk to AI like a knowledgeable colleague, not a search engine
- Be very clear about your specific goal upfront
- Always let AI ask YOU questions first before it produces anything
- The more thoroughly you answer, the better the output
“You’re an expert domain investor and appraiser. I want to build a reusable process to sort through large lists of expired auction domains and surface the best investment opportunities for me to review. Before you write anything, ask me questions to clarify exactly what I’m looking for. Once you fully understand my goals, budget, and criteria, produce a reusable scoring prompt I can paste a domain list into, and a short summary of the process. Do NOT make assumptions — ask first.”
- Afternic releases top-selling keywords monthly — check GoDaddy/Afternic channels and YouTube
- Current top keywords (May/July data): AI, My, The, Group
- “The” is a perennial top keyword — stable and reliable for years, not going anywhere
- “My” is in prefix position — always “My[Word]”, never “[Word]My” — easy to search for
- Screenshot the top-keyword list from Afternic/Adam
- Paste into Gemini or Grok (best for reading images)
- Prompt: “Give me these words separated by spaces”
- Copy keyword list → paste into expireddomains.net or auctions.godaddy.com filter (“contains”)
- Add filters: .com only, no hyphens, no numbers
- 460,000 names shrinks to ~6,900 → further to ~108 manageable .coms
- Save as watchlist: e.g., “Afternic Top Keywords — July 2026”
- Return to it anytime — always current, always yours
Best for Twitter/X data. Track what Afternic sellers are posting. Identify trending keywords from real-time sale announcements.
Best for reading images/screenshots. Best for transcribing YouTube videos into actionable notes.
Best for strategy, reasoning, and building reusable prompts. Claude less ideal for image reading.
Very fast inference. Great for quick keyword extraction from images like those posted on X,and rapid list processing.
Section 7Bidding Strategy & Execution
- No hard close on expired auctions — late bids auto-extend the auction. Sniping does NOT work.
- Set your max bid / walkaway price BEFORE the auction heats up
- Decide your ROI ceiling in advance and stick to it — no exceptions
- Cheaper and lower-risk than auctions
- Best names get snatched at auction — you’re hunting for diamonds in the rough
- One strong closeout sale (~$2K+) can cover many closeout acquisitions
- Buying marginal names = losing money fast — be ruthlessly selective
- Viable, profitable strategy when done with discipline
Section 8GoDaddy Premier Services — Your Resource
- Daily curated expired auction newsletter (Mon–Fri) — contact your account manager to subscribe
- Daily closeouts newsletter — same, ask your Premier Rep
- AI-powered custom recommendations based on your portfolio and what’s in auction
- Personalized investment strategy support — nearly every Premier rep has 10–20 years of experience
Q&A HighlightsFrom the Session
- Build or use an AI tool trained on real retail sales data
- Ask: “How likely is this name to sell on a scale of 1–10 within 1/3/5 years?”
- Ask: “What price maximizes velocity vs. return for this specific name?”
- Key insight: Some names have only 1 potential buyer — lowering price won’t speed up sale. Others have liquidity — pricing does matter.
- ~2% of a startup’s funding round is typically spent on their domain. Watch for funded startups in your keyword space.
Sell many names at $5K and below. Must cover renewals with sales. Focus on cash flow and buy cheap.
Rick Schwartz style — 7–8 figures only. Doesn’t care about time. Small portfolio of elite names.
Buy domain, build a site with AI (200 sites in 12 months is doable). Sell a “business in a box.” Far more valuable.
